Getting PMDD care by telehealth in North Carolina
Clinically reviewed by Josephine W. Hazeley, PMHNP-BC on · Last updated
PMDD care fits telehealth well: the diagnosis is built from symptom tracking you do at home over two cycles, and the treatment is medication management that works over video visits. In North Carolina you can complete a psychiatric evaluation for PMDD and receive ongoing care by telehealth from anywhere in the state — no in-person visit required. Because the diagnosis depends on prospective daily ratings across at least two cycles (StatPearls), much of the work happens between visits, which is exactly what telehealth supports.
This is a companion to the PMDD guide for North Carolina and to our overview of telehealth psychiatry and medication management in NC.
Why does PMDD suit telehealth?
Because the two things it requires — daily tracking and medication management — do not need an exam room. A PMDD diagnosis is confirmed by daily symptom ratings you keep at home, and the standard tool (the Daily Record of Severity of Problems) is designed to be completed daily over at least two cycles and brought to your appointments (IAPMD). The visits themselves are conversations: reviewing your chart, deciding on treatment, and adjusting it. None of that is lost over video, and being able to do it from home removes a real barrier during a week when leaving the house feels like too much.
What does the process look like?
It usually starts before your first appointment. A common path:
- Start tracking. Begin rating your symptoms daily while your intake is scheduled, noting your period — so the diagnostic picture is already forming by your first visit rather than starting from zero. See how PMDD is diagnosed for what to record.
- The evaluation. A psychiatric evaluation by video covers your history, your symptom pattern, and what you have already tried, and reviews your tracking so far. A prescriber can make a working diagnosis and, where appropriate, begin treatment while confirmation continues (StatPearls).
- Treatment and follow-up. If treatment is started — often an SSRI, taken continuously or only in the luteal phase (see PMDD treatment options) — follow-up visits track how it is working against your chart and adjust the plan.
Can PMDD medication be prescribed by telehealth in NC?
Yes. The first-line medications for PMDD are SSRIs (StatPearls), which are not controlled substances and are routinely prescribed and managed through telehealth psychiatric care. A drospirenone-containing contraceptive, another PMDD option, is likewise a prescription a telehealth prescriber can coordinate. Your medication is sent to a pharmacy you choose. What to expect from telehealth psychiatric visits generally is covered in our telehealth psychiatry overview.
Who provides this care?
Mindful Counseling & Wellness is a North Carolina telehealth practice led by a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with a focus on reproductive and perinatal mental health — the area PMDD sits within. Care is delivered by video to patients anywhere in the state, with in-network coverage through major North Carolina health plans available now (currently through Headway, with direct plan contracts being added) and self-pay welcome now.
How do you get started?
With one step, and ideally your tracking already underway. Request an appointment through Get Started or call (919) 739-3808. New patients are typically seen within 1–3 business days, by telehealth anywhere in North Carolina. If you can, begin a daily symptom log now — it is the most useful head start you can give the process.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
